Support alimony is usually granted only to a spouse who requires a period of rehabilitation to become self-supporting. It is income tax deductible for the payor and taxable as income for the payee. It is subject to modification on a showing of changed circumstances including cohabitation, and it normally terminates upon the death of either party or the remarriage of the recipient.
