Effective across the nation, Child Support Guidelines control the amount of support to be paid by the non-custodial parent and is also used in joint custody situations. The amount of child support due is determined based upon the number of children, the amount of time spent with the child(ren) and amount of income. A certain percentage of the parents’ combined income is designated as child-related expenses, and the portion to be paid by each parent is the percentage s/he earns of the combined total. Support is required until each child reaches age 18 or may continue through the 18th year if s/he is regularly and continuously attending high school. Further support may be possible for a disabled child.
